Solar Battery Storage Explained

What Is a Solar Battery

A solar battery, similar to any kind of battery, simply stores energy. As a solar battery is connected to a Solar panel system, it is able to store any surplus (excess) solar energy that a system generates. Without a solar battery connected to your Solar PV system, any surplus energy would be sent back to the National Grid. However, with a solar battery connected, that extra solar energy can be stored and used when your home is demanding more energy than your Solar Panels are generating. This is particularly useful for during the evening and night, when the sun is no longer out, meaning your Solar Panels are unlikely to generate.

How Does A Solar Battery Work?

Solar batteries work by storing direct current, (DC) electricity produced by your solar panels for later use. When your solar panel system is generating more energy than your home is demanding, the surplus (excess) energy is used to charge your battery. Instead of going back to the National grid. Later, when your solar panels aren’t producing enough electricity, you can draw energy from your battery storage. A built-in converter inside the battery, will turn the DC power into Alternating Current (AC) electricity, ready for safe use. To power your devices, appliances and your home from green energy. When your solar batteries are fully charged, your excess energy is then sent back to the grid. You will only ever draw electricity from the National Grid when your battery is completely empty. The higher your battery’s capacity, the more solar energy it can store. Resulting in more savings.

While batteries are usually part of a home solar PV system, they can also be used independant of solar, or with other renewables such as Wind turbines.

Solar batteries have a dual purpose in a grid tied system. Firstly, they can export unused energy to the grid. Secondly, they can import and store electricity. Some batteries (Smart batteries) can even use Artificial Intelligence to import energy when the cost of energy is at its lowest.

The Benefits of an Energy Storage System

  • 1. Store Your Surplus Solar Energy

Although sunlight is one of our planet’s most abundant and freely available energy resources, factors such as time of year and geographical location can impact generation. By installing a solar battery you take your energy further. Gaining more control by being able to store your surplus solar energy.

  • 2. ReducE Your Green Energy Waste

By adding battery storage onto your Solar Panel system you will be able to use more of the energy your Solar Panels generate. Resulting in greater savings and less green energy waste. As a solar battery stores energy generated in peak sun-hours, you will have a continuous supply of renewable energy throughout the day. This means you will be relying more on green energy and less on “dirty energy” from the National Grid. Reducing your carbon footprint and bills even further.

  • 3. SAVE MORE MONEY WITH BATTERY STORAGE

By storing your solar energy and using it during peak hours, you will be reducing the amount of energy you will need to buy from your energy supplier. Essentially, adding a solar battery means thats more of your home energy usage will be green! Solar energy is effectively free to generate, however the energy you import from the Grid is becoming more and more expensive.

Although the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariff, will pay you for your exported energy, the rates compared to the import costs still mean it’s best to keep as much renewable energy powering your home as possible. And with a solar battery installed this is now possible!

  • 4. Gain Energy Independence

By installing a solar battery, you will be more self-sufficient. By relying less on the National Grid’s power supply, you will be impacted less by the increase in energy prices! A solar battery gives you the option of when to use your renewable energy, or when to draw from the grid. This gives you ultimate control over how much you are spending on your electricity and how much energy you are using and when.

  • 5. Get A Green Backup Energy Supply

By adding a battery storage system, you will gain a back up supply of green energy. Essentially meaning your home will have the ability to go off grid. This means in an instance of a power cut, you will have your very own back up supply of green energy.

Some solar batteries will enable you to use your solar electricity when there is a power cut ,so that you’re not left without power or lighting. When a power cut strikes, a storage of energy could be invaluable to your household.

How much does it cost to install a solar battery?

The cost of installing a solar battery is dependant on a variety of factors:

  • The capacity, brand and model of the battery you choose
  • The installer you choose to go with
  • Whether or not you are retrofitting into an exiting system or installing the battery as part of a new solar PV system.

Here at Deege Solar we are dedicated to providing transparent pricing for all our solar products. Our AC coupled Solar battery installation prices start from £3000 and range up to £6000. If you would like to discuss more about our battery storage options, including which solar battery is best for your home get in touch today.

What Size Solar Battery Do I Need?

The battery capacity your solar project requires is dependent on 4 key factors.

  1. The amount of energy your system is capable of generating. This is dependent on your roof size and geographical location.
  2. The amount of energy your household consumes during the day.
  3. The amount of energy your household requires in the afternoon.
  4. And lastly your budget.

This can easily be calculated through a pre-assessment, which we offer here at Deege Solar for free. Simply just fill out the enquiry form.

FAQs

What are 3 drawbacks to storing solar energy in batteries? ›

Q: What are the main cons of solar battery storage? A: The main cons are the high upfront costs, needing dedicated space for installation, more complexity in system design, and more maintenance of parts.

Is solar battery storage worth it? ›

Solar batteries remove this limitation, providing an energy storage system you can count on during cloudy days and nighttime. Solar batteries are generally worth it for homeowners living in areas with higher electricity costs, no net metering programs, frequent electricity outages, or limited hours of sunlight.

What is the most efficient way to store solar energy? ›

Lithium-ion batteries are the go-to for home solar energy storage. They're relatively cheap (and getting cheaper), low profile, and suited for a range of needs. Other batteries commonly available for residential use include saltwater batteries and lead-acid batteries.

How can I improve my solar battery storage? ›

How to Optimise Solar Batteries
  1. The key to maximising the potential of your solar battery lies in efficient management of charging and discharging, maintenance, and constant monitoring. ...
  2. Maximise Solar Charging. ...
  3. Understand Your Battery's Capacity. ...
  4. Regular Check-ups. ...
  5. Keep It Cool. ...
  6. Update Your System Software.

Can battery storage save money? ›

That's where battery storage comes in. After storing energy generated from renewables, you can then use this energy during more expensive peak hours. This means you draw less from the grid and ultimately save money.

How much does a 10kW battery cost? ›

There isn't a single solar battery that's best for everyone. The cost of residential solar batteries ranges from $1,000 to $1,300 per kWh of capacity installed. Based on this, the cost of a 10kWh battery could range from $10,000 to $13,000, excluding any potential rebates or incentives.

What happens to solar power when batteries are full? ›

What happens to solar power when batteries are full? If your battery is charged to 100% capacity and you still have excess solar production, the excess power typically gets pushed (or “exported”) to the local electricity grid to power nearby systems.

How long will a 10kW battery last? ›

In such scenarios, a 10kW (10,000W) solar battery can provide approximately 10 to 12 hours of backup power. If your power usage is more sporadic, you might even squeeze an extra hour or two out of it - this will depend, again, on your usage. However, there is another crucial point to understand.

What is the cheapest way to store heat? ›

One of the cheapest, most commonly used options is a water tank, but materials such as molten salts or metals can be heated to higher temperatures and therefore offer a higher storage capacity.
