Air Fryer Apple Chips

Also known as my kids all time favourite snack that they will munch on every day and any day given the chance.

In fact, they love apples so much that our air fryer apple chips were inspired by their love for apples back in 2016.

We’re going back to before Jorge was born and when I was pregnant and finding something that Sofia could eat herself to get her through the weaning process and eating her own food.

What we came up with was apple slices tossed in cinnamon. They were delicious and even now, her and Jorge want these as their mid morning snack every day.

But they taste even better in the air fryer. Adding some healthy oil and you have three ingredient air fryer apple chips.

Air Fryer Apple Crisps

Or if you live in the UK, they would be called air fryer apple crisps, instead of air fryer apple chips. The exact same thing, just a different name on the other side of the ocean.

Can You Dry Fruit In An Air Fryer?

Yes you can and dried air fryer fruit is yummy. You use the dehydrator button on your air fryer oven and then cook your fruit as normal.

You start off with air fryer apple slices being loaded onto the air fryer oven shelf. Then when they are done, they come out as air fryer dehydrator apples.

You can then use them for snacks, and they are also perfect for putting in your kids packed lunch boxes or taking to work. Or like I do, are perfect for munching on while watching TV.

How To Dry Apples In Air Fryer?

It is quick and easy to dry apples in the air fryer:

  • Sliced Apples – You need to thinly slice some apples before you can dehydrate them. I recommend using a mandoline for this as it perfectly slices them.
  • Cinnamon – Apples taste amazing when they have been tossed in cinnamon. Do this from above and sprinkle a bit at a time, until you have an even coating.
  • Oil – You can use any healthy oil on your apple chips. We sprayed extra virgin avocado oil on ours, but olive oil or rapeseed oil would also do the trick.

Any air fryer with a dehydrator will do the trick, though we are using our Power Air Fryer Oven.

The alternative method, if you don’t have an air fryer oven, is to use the standard air fryer basket. This would be more like crispy apple chips and they wont be dehydrated. They still taste yummy and make a great apple chips alternative.

  1. Slice Apples
  2. Toss in cinnamon
  3. Toss in favourite healthy oil.
  4. Load into the air fryer basket.
  5. Cook + snack.

How Long To Air Fry Apple Chips?

The air fryer apple chips cook time varies depending on whether you are dehydrating or you are air frying.

  • For the air fryer basket apple chips take 15 minutes.
  • For the air fryer oven apple chips take 4 hours.

Air Fryer Apple Chips Temperature?

Just like with the cook time, the air fryer apple chips temperature varies too.

If you are cooking air fryer apple chips in the air fryer basket 200c/400f is the best option. Any less and your apple chips will not crispy enough and will be soggy warm apple slices.

For the air fryer oven, the dehydrator works at a temperature of 30c/85f. This is because you are drying out your fruit rather than cooking it.

Soaking the potatoes does something magical with the starches—it helps achieve the coveted French fry crispiness and prevents the fries from sticking together. This is what I did for the air fryer, too. I soaked these potatoes for about an hour or so, but I've also soaked them for up to 24 hours with no ill effect.

How do you cut apples for apple chips? ›

Slice the apples as thinly as you can into rounds, around 1/8" thick. We like using a mandoline to get thin and even slices, just use caution. If you don't have a mandoline, use the sharpest knife you have and (carefully) slice as thin of slices as possible.

What makes apple chips so fast? ›

Some do not suggest the use of baking paper or tin foil as it can affect the airflow inside the air fryer. If you are using baking paper, cut the paper to the size required and ensure the meat can weigh it down adequately. Failing to do so may result in the paper flying up into the element and burning.

Rather than cooking your frozen chips in the oven, try them out in your air fryer for super crunchy chips. Personally, I think they have more crunch compared to regular oven cooking them.
