How to Free Up CPU Usage (2024)

If any of your company's computers have been giving you sluggish performance, an over-taxed CPU may be the culprit. This is particularly true in the case of computers that run an assortment of programs and processes simultaneously. Your company's computers only have so much CPU power to go around, so it's important to make sure it's being used efficiently. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can free up CPU resources on your business PCs.

  1. 1.

Disable extraneous processes. Press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" and click "Start Task Manager" to bring up your computer's Task Manager. Scroll down the list and keep an eye out for any processes you don't recognize. Next, click on any processes you wish to disable, then click the "End Process" button. When asked for confirmation, click "End Process" to prevent this process from eating up any more CPU power.

  2. 2.

Defragment the hard drives of the affected computers on a regular basis. Every time you access or delete a file, your hard disk becomes cluttered with fragmentation. After extended periods of fragmentation, your computer's CPU can slow down dramatically. To defragment a hard disk, open Windows Explorer and right-click the affected disk, select the "Properties" tab, then the "Tools" tab. Click the "Defragment Now" button to commence the disk defragmentation. The amount of time the process will take to complete depends on the size of the disk and the level of fragmentation that has taken place.

  3. 3.

Abstain from running too many programs at once. If possible, make a point of running no more than one or two programs at a time. This is particularly important if your employees regularly work with programs that require a substantial amount of CPU power to run properly.

  4. 4.

Remove any programs your employees don't use from your company's computers. To do this, click Start, then "Control Panel," then "Programs and Features." Scroll down the list of installed programs and right-click any you wish to remove, then click "Uninstall."
