How is this game not more popular? (2024)

I am coming from WoW, ESO, and FFXIV and have been playing GW2 for about 2 months now. I honestly do not see how this game is not as popular as the big 3 MMO's. It pretty much has all the content they have, the themes are cool, servers are stable, not to mention there is no sub fee so that is a huge plus. The outfits and armor is amazing. The game makes you feel like it isn't just a cash grab. Everything you spend for in the shop is optional and voluntary.

The only thing i dislike is the grind to get cool things like flying, legendary's . I mean every MMO has that but in GW2 it takes EXTREMELY long. Other than that, I am enjoying my stay in Tyria so far :) Don't plan on going back to the other 3

As of the most current numbers I can find it is currently the #3 most played MMO (behind WoW and FFXIV), so it already kind of has what you're wishing for unless things have dramatically shifted in the last 3-4 months.

It really just is this board that is super dead more than the game itself isn't popular. It was sort of like this for the original as well, but this time around the board just never had any long term people chatting about the game. Really if you want to talk about the game with a lot of people you'll have to, unfortunately, look elsewhere but if you're just playing the game going to any of the more popular zones will pretty much swamp you with players.

I've always though GW2 suffered from being a good MMO released right as the MMO craze started dying down after a deluge of crap trying to cash in on WoW.

It's always been a great game, just doesn't get quite the attention it should

I think super-competitive people don't like that in PVE it's not rewarding at all to be competitive, and in PVP, there's a point (which isn't super hard to hit) where your equipment can't get much better and you just have to improve your skills. You can't just grind the gear treadmill to be superior, and they live for comparing themselves to other players in terms of stats or rankings. There are a lot of people with this type of personality and so I imagine they find it unfulfilling. Which is fine, many other games exist for them. I feel like this game has a more laid-back player base and I think it's just designed to fill an MMO niche that the other games don't. They don't have the money to compete directly with WoW or FF14 and what's the point? those already exist and if constant vertical grind is what you want you can already get that.

wow you’ve never played pvp or have only tried wvw you don’t know what you’re talking about.

as for why pvp is dying it’s because it gets ignored by the devs too much 1decent patch every 6months isn’t good if there are existing issues still or broken builds among other things.

Also can’t compare or tell someone to go from a ftp game to a subbed one way bigger ask.

Im not a trained monkey so i dont enjoy spamming the same lame 5 skills over and over? These dumbed down MMOs like ESO, NW, GW2, the dead Wildstar etc, are so bad and boring.
Not to mention the absolute dog s*** voice acting of most of the playable races that cant even be muted without muting all dialogue.

spoilers it wouldn’t work anyway the combat system is great and requires some tactics when fighting people.
