Get more storage for your Android TV (2024)

If you need more space on your Android TV, you can remove some of your apps and games. You can also connect a USB drive.

Note: The steps below may not work for all TVs that run Android TV.

Add space by removing apps or games

  1. On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings Get more storage for your Android TV (1).
  3. Under "Device," select Apps.
  4. Under "Downloaded," select an app you want to remove Get more storage for your Android TV (2) Uninstall Get more storage for your Android TV (3) OK.

Add space with a USB drive

You can connect a USB drive to your Android TV to add more space for apps and other content.

Set up your drive

Format your drive

Android TV only supports drives with FAT formats. After you connect your drive, Android TV will check the format.

Note: When you format your drive, you’ll erase what’s on it. Transfer any content you want to keep before you start.

  • If Android TV can recognize the format: It sets the drive up as removable storage.
  • If Android TV can't recognize the format: It asks you to format the drive as internal or removable storage.

After your format is decided, follow the instructions from your Android TV.

Choose your storage

  • Internal storage: You can store more data on your Android TV. You can’t move your data anywhere else.
  • Removable storage: You can move content on the drive to another device. Apps and games can’t be moved.

Eject your drive

To keep your content safe, eject your drive before you unplug it from your Android TV.

  1. On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings Get more storage for your Android TV (4).
  3. Under "Device," select Storage and reset Get more storage for your Android TV (5).
  4. Select your USB drive Get more storage for your Android TV (6) Eject.

After you eject your drive from your Android TV, you won’t be able to see or use the apps stored on it.

Change the storage type

You can change how your drive is set up at any time.

Note: When you format your drive, you’ll erase what’s on it. Transfer any content you want to keep before you start.

  1. On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings Get more storage for your Android TV (7).
  3. Under "Device," select Storage and reset Get more storage for your Android TV (8).
  4. Select your USB drive.
  5. Choose how you want to format your drive.

Move apps or other content to your USB drive

Move apps to a drive

  1. On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings Get more storage for your Android TV (9).
  3. Under "Device," select Apps.
  4. Select the app you want to move.
  5. Scroll down and select Storage used.
  6. Select your USB drive.

After you eject your drive from your Android TV, you won’t be able to see or use the apps stored on it.

Move other content to a drive

If you set your drive as internal storage, you can make more space on your Android TV by moving content to the drive.

Note: If you move content to your USB drive, you may need to plug in your drive to use all your apps and other content.

  1. On your Android TV, go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down and select Settings Get more storage for your Android TV (10).
  3. Under "Device," select Storage and reset Get more storage for your Android TV (11).
  4. Select your USB drive.
  5. Select Migrate data Get more storage for your Android TV (12) Move now.
