Alongside the daily grind in Fallout Shelter, one of the main things you'll be looking for are collectibles. These come in all kinds of forms from Legendary Characters who excel in combat or production, to Pets, Weapons, Outfits and even Junk Items. Here, we'll be taking you through them all.
How to get Legendary Characters
Legendary Characters, unlike weapons and outfits, are only found at random through opening Lunchboxes. There are 22 Legendary Characters in the game, all named after and based on Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 characters, and also all come with a total of 40 SPECIAL points distributed across their stats.
With that in mind, your only hope for finding Legendary Characters is grinding out your Objectives or stumping up the cash for Luncboxes. If you're specifically aiming for characters over anything else - and don't want to spend any money - then be sure to use your one daily "reroll" of an Objective to try and get one with a Lunchbox reward.

Fallout Shelter Pets work in a similar fashion, with the Dweller-enhancing companions also only available through chance or in-app purchase. A minor difference is that pets are obtained through Pet Carriers, which act almost as a Lunchbox-within-a-Lunchbox by containing a random Common, Rare, or Legendary pet inside.
The Pet Carriers themselves are only acquired either at random, through opening Lunchboxes, or by purchasing them in quantities of one, five, fifteen or forty from the in-game shop. As with the Legendary Characters then, you'll have to double-down on completing Lunchbox Objectives and cancelling the standard Caps rewards if you want to speed things up.
How to get Legendary Weapons, Outfits and Rare Junk Items
What are they?
There are a significant amount of weapons and outfits in Fallout Shelter, all of which come in various tiers - weapons range from standard pistols, rifles and shotguns to Energy, Heavy, and the special Institute models added update 1.4, for instance - but some are easier to get than others.
Weapons also have various prefixes like Rusty, Enhanced, Hardened, and Armor Piercing, too, which denote their rarity and effectiveness within their class. Outfits, likewise, come in the standard, Sturdy, and Heavy varieties which again modify their rarity and potency when equipped.
Weapons, of course, help your Dwellers defend themselves and the Vault against intruders, whilst outfits provide not only boosts to combat stats, but also to a Dweller or explorer's SPECIALs, which can help boost production back home.

How to get them
Really, weapons and outfits - Legendary or not - are accrued through chance encounters.
Raiders will drop randomised, level-appropriate weapons and outfits when you thwart their attacks on the Vault, and your Wasteland explorers will likewise find them - in increasing rarity and quality the further away they are - as they roam the barren lands outside your cosy Vault.
The only other means of getting Legendary weapons and outfits is through Lunchboxes which, whilst not being restricted to your level and population like the loot from Raiders, are totally randomised and impossible to influence.
