There are many companions to bring into the party inDivinity Original Sin 2,perhaps the most iconic of whom is Fane. At first glance, Fane is a skeletal know-it-all searching for his missing mask, but there's a lot more enigmato this character than meets the eye. Should the player choose Fane for his origin story, they are taken on a mysterious quest focused onthe disappearance of Fane's people – the Eternals.

10 Fane IsAn Eternal

That's right – Fane is not a skeleton, and he will rudely remind everybody who asks of that fact. Fane belongs to a long-dead race called the Eternals,a precursor race to the seven races of Rivellon who shared features of the seven races to come. When the Seven Gods of the Eternalsgifted their Source to the world, the seven races were born, each bearing the features ofone of the gods.

Fane, along with most of the other Eternals, did not support this decision and helped to seal away the gods, but it was too late. InDivinity Original Sin 2,Fane wakes up with little knowledge of his people's pastand seeks to uncover this long-forgotten history.

Fane's origin quest begins with him looking for his Mask of the Shapeshifter and goes on to uncover the secrets left by the Eternals throughout Rivellon. Their presence is felt everywhere and in everything, and Fane even has special dialogue when interacting with relics related to the Seven Gods.

The lore ofDivinity Original Sin 2 is deep, complex, and sprawling. Fane's story educates the player through the history of the world and explains much of the origins of Rivellon and Source.

8 Being UndeadHas Consequences...

Divinity Original Sin 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Fane (4)

InDivinity Original Sin 2,Fane is not the only "undead" players can choose. Each of the four playable races (human, elf, dwarf, lizard) has an undead counterpart on the character creation screen, but there's a catch – NPCs and enemies alike are horrified by undead walking among them.

Additionally, undead characters like Fanetake damage from traditional healingSource powers and healing areas like blessed fountains due to the Undead talent. Instead, undead heal from poison flasks and poison abilities.

7 ...But Undeads Are The Best Hybrid Race

Divinity Original Sin 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Fane (5)

Because undead races are a combination of their living race and undead, they have abilities belonging to both. An undead elf character, for example, has the elf Corpse Eater talent as well as the Undead talent and the Play Dead and Dome of Protection abilities.

Fane is unique in his ability to shapeshift into any race with his Mask of the Shapeshifter. It's important to remember thatall undead characters will take damage from healing, even if Fane is shapeshifted.

6 Fane's Mask Hides His True Form

When Fane wakes upbelow deck on the way to Fort Joy, he is without his most prized possession: the Mask of the Shapeshifter. Once the player has tracked down the mask's whereabouts later in the game, Fane unlocks the ability to shapeshift into any race he desires for any given moment. This hides his true form and allows access to every race's unique abilities.

Until the player finds the location of the Mask, though, Fane's face must be hidden by a hood or a helmet to avoid provoking NPCs into combat.

5 Bony Fingers Are GreatFor Picking Locks

Being a skeleton has its perks. One particularly useful skill is having an unbreakable lockpick attached to the hand. From level one (as long as the player has a level one thievery skill) this allows the player to skip lockpicks almost entirely and gain access to restricted areas from the get-go.

While Fane is traditionally a mana and Source-basedcharacter, his bony fingerspair exceedingly well with a stealthy class too – such as a shadowbladeor rogue.

4 Fane Is A Wizard (By Default)

Divinity Original Sin 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Fane (8)

If the player chooses Fane as their main character from the start and makes no alterations, he will start out as a wizard. This allowsFane to control combat from a distance and focus his time on hard-hitting spells. It makes sense considering his mystical past, but this isn't the only option available to players.

InDivinity Original Sin 2, each of the main characters with an origin storycanbe customized almost entirely, including class. The characters' origin stories won't change, just their gameplay. This means Fane can still explore the enigmatic history of the Eternals while serving as the team'sfront line bruiser, for example.

3 He Works Well With ElementalCompanions

Having an elemental companion in the party kills two birds with one stone for Fane. One example of this interaction is when a wayfarer companioncreates a poison poolbeneath Fane's feet in combat. In this situation, Fane healsover time, while enemies closebytake damage.

Divinity Original Sin 2 is full of interactions between elements and the environment. Having an undead like Fane in the party opens the door to some of the more deadly combinations in the game.

2 His Skull Is Customizable

Divinity Original Sin 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Fane (10)

The Eternals would not say they look like skeletons, rather the opposite – mortal skeletons look likethem (Fane even has a few voice lines commenting on this). The Eternals like to carve their skulls with ornate patterns to distinguish themselves, and Fane is no exception.

In character customization, Fane's voice and origin are the only two things the player cannot change.Playing as a snarky skeleton is one thing, playing as a snarky skeleton with a comically large mustache and goatee is another.

1 Time Warp Is One Of The Best Abilities In Divinity 2

Divinity Original Sin 2: 10 Things You Need To Know About Fane (11)

Fane has the wholly unique ability to grant a member of the party an immediate extra turn with his skill Time Warp. It costs 2 action points but can grant a companion the extra time they need to set up an elemental interaction or get out of a tricky spot. Fane can also use Time Stop on himself.

Time Warp can only be used every 3 turns, but when used at the right time it easily turns the tide of a seemingly impossible battle.
