I am looking at buying the Sony KD-55X85J. I have a Denon 3312Ci for my sound. I'm wondering if I can control the volume on the Denon from the TV remote if I connect them with an Optical cable. The reason is the receiver will be in the basem*nt under where he TV is and I want to minimize my cabling. If I can control it over the Optical I won't need to run an IR blaster up to the TV location.

No, optical cable only carries the digital audio in one direction, no control of volume.
Control of devices like an AVR from the TV's remote requires CEC which is an HDMI feature.

Thank you, this is what I thought, but was hoping something had changed. Now if go with HDMI exactly what do I do? Currently my Denon is connected to the TV via one of the "Monitor HDMI out" ports to bring in the video. But in this new setup the TV will do all the switching as everything (Chromecast, Fire TV) is contained within it. The TV has 4 HDMI ports, do I just connect one of those to one of the HDMI ports on the receiver? That is really my only choice, so which one on the TV do I use? I assume then this cable will run to one of the "TV HDMI in (arc)" ports on the back of the Denon. They are labeled "ARC" so should I assume the volume will be controlled by the TV remote? Sorry for my confusion, I am used to setting up things in reverse, with receiver controlling all the switching.

If you are connecting the Denon AVR to the Sony TV's HDMI3 with one of the new 25ft HDMI cables, you shouldn't need the optical cable at all if you can use Arc over the HDMI cable for audio from the TV to the AVR
.
You could connect the DVR to a Denon AVR HDMI input (probably a shorter cable) instead of the longer cable to the TV if the cable DVR does not support 4K.

Good point, even if the DVR did support it I never watch anything on it that I would want 4K for. So you think those 25 ft cables I bought will be fine? That is they will support ARC assuming everything else is in order?

I have my chromecast audio linked with optical output to amplified speakers (optical input) and I can control the volume by mobile phone. I have my tv box connected by hdmi to smartv and the optical output of my smarttv connected to the same amplified speakers (optical input) and I can change the volume on the tv box remote
