Butterfly Colours – what do they like?

  • December 29, 2015

Butterfly colours … no, we’re not talking about what our butterflies look like, but instead, what they see!

We say it often, but butterflies love pink, red and white … but do you know why?

Butterflies haveimmobile, compound eyes that can see a vast array of color. Unfortunately for them, they are a little bit short-sighted!

They see on the ultraviolet light spectrum, which is why pink, red and white are especially popular with them. Have you ever walked under a UV light wearing white clothing? It glows! That’s exactly what our butterflies see.

We have a display set up at the sanctuary with a UV light, so you can see for yourself how you would look to our butterflies. Make sure you check it out!
