The Kia Optima is a reasonably priced midsize sedan. But the 2016 model year received four recalls, two investigations, and several complaints about problems ranging from transmission shudders and fluid leaks, to airbag issues and faulty window regulators.
Key Points
- The 2016 Kia Optima has four recalls and two investigations issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Two recalls deal with malfunctioning driver-side airbag inflators, and the other two addressed a high-pressure fuel line leak and possible front driveshaft fracture.
- Out of the 239 registered complaints, several consumers mention excessive oil-burning, and engine knocking, while others report a potential fire risk and engine seizure.
- Other problems include unintended acceleration, transmission shudders, fluid leaks, airbag issues, and faulty window regulators.
- At the end of the day, the 2016 Kia Optima’s biggest problems are either currently under investigation, or already have a fix, making it a decent bet overall.
Owners Report 2016 Kia Optima having Problems with Heavy Oil Consumption, Engine Failure, and a Fire Risk, Leading to a Recall
The 2016 Kia Optima has quite a lot of engine issues. Out of the 239 complaints, 87 are registered against the sedan’s four-cylinder GDI engines, more specifically, the turbocharged Theta II. Per the NHTSA, complaints about excessive oil consumption and engine knocking sounds are common. Owners report heavy oil consumption, about a quart every 1,000 miles. The cause happens to be its faulty piston rings that fail prematurely. Drivers have faced oil burning issues from as early as 30,000 miles.
Reports of the engine seizing and failing unexpectedly have also been registered. Per the complainants, the car either completely stalls or goes into limp mode. This highlights yet another drawback of the GDI engines. Technicians have found these engines to house a faulty fuel injector system. According to them, excess fuel floods the cylinder causing it to throw a check engine light and force the car into limp mode.
Other engine-related problems include overheating and excessive vibrations. More concerning though, would be the possible fire risk. A few unlucky owners saw their Optima burst into flames. Thankfully, the cars involved were parked, and nobody got injured. The cause is unknown, but Kia has a recall against what they think might be the reason. The Optima’s high-pressure fuel pipe that connects to the fuel pump outlet may have been damaged. This could cause a fuel leak and if near an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire. Per the NHTSA, the recall involves roughly 75,600 cars.
2016 Kia Optima Powertrain Issues include Unintended Acceleration, Shaky Transmission, and a Front Driveshaft Recall
Powertrain issues aren’t uncommon either. The majority of owners experienced the transmission juddering and exhibiting choppy gear shifts. Problems like transmission failure and fluid leaks have also been registered. Other concerns include abnormal noise and hesitation to accelerate after depressing the throttle pedal.
This led to the NHTSA initiating an investigation upon receiving several complaints. It delves into the Kia Optima’s vehicle speed control issues, which include uncommanded acceleration, runaway throttle conditions, surging, stalling, and loss of motive power. The NHTSA found the cause to be a defective electronic throttle control system. The investigation is open and includes 52 affected products.
Problems with the front axle are also quite common on Optimas equipped with the 2.4L engine. If the driveshaft cracks and separates from the vehicle, it will not be able to move forward. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied on exiting the vehicle, it may roll away. This resulted in Kia issuing a recall.
Faulty Window Regulator and Airbag Inflator Issues Plague 2016 Kia Optima
The Kia Optima’s electrical problems include faulty headlights and window actuators. Many owners experienced the windows getting stuck in either up or down position. In some cases, the windows will fall straight into the door, unable to be rolled up again. The problem has been diagnosed to be a faulty window regulator. Kia has addressed the issue and released a technical service bulletin. At $550 per window, the fix is quite expensive and isn’t covered by the dealership, leaving owners frustrated.
Models fitted with the automatic headlamps seem to have their lights going out unexpectedly. This is quite a safety issue, and few drivers have raised their concerns as to why this is happening. Kia hasn’t yet acknowledged the problem as the issue is fairly uncommon, and there aren’t that many complaints reported.
Cases of airbags not deploying have been reported as well. Per the NHTSA, there are two recalls on record. The first recall addresses the driver-side airbag inflator which could underinflate due to an improperly installed end seal. Another recall was introduced to replace the driver-side airbag module as the second stage wouldn’t deploy.
The NHTSA has also opened an investigation that goes into the car’s airbag control unit (ACU). The issue involves a faulty electronic component inside the ACU that monitors signals from crash sensors to determine whether airbag deployment is required. Only if the conditions are met will the system deploy the appropriate airbags.
Despite Complaints, the 2016 Kia Optima is Still a Recommended Buy
Besides the fire risk and potential airbag failure, the rest of the problems are fairly minor. The engine’s oil-burning issue is worth keeping in mind, as are the transmission problems. However, Kia has addressed the issues with recalls and service bulletins. Despite the complaints, we’d still recommend a used Kia Optima. It’s a feature-rich mid-size sedan with an affordable price tag. So, if you are looking to buy a 2016 Optima, make sure to have a mechanic look at it. Also, check whether it’s part of the recall and see if the necessary components are replaced.

Many Issues
I bought my KIA brand new. For the first two years it ran perfect. 2years and 2 days later the motor blew. I have the Turbo. I fought to get it covered under warranty and it finally went through. My motor was on back order for several months. They finally replaced it mid February 2019. Since then I have had nothing but problems. My heat does not work and automatically defaults to air when you turn It on. The defrost does work though. My back passenger window stopped working. A month later the front passenger window stopped working and a week after that my driver window went out.I have not had use of my front windows for quite some time because they said the warranty doesn't cover it. The cost is $1500. The passenger side handle broke off. Not covered. The rear-end eats through brand new tires every couple of months. Leaving the tires wearing from the inside as if im driving down the road with them tilted outward. This has been a complaint for a year now. The latest answer I got was my actual wheels are bent. I do not drive the car like a lunatic and I have never had an accident. They want $550 each wheel. None of these issues are at the fault of myself. Yet there is always an explanation, reason or excuse why it isn't covered. This car was the worse investment I ever made.

2016 Kia Optima
I purchased a 2016 Kia Optima in the year of 2017. Approximately 2 years after I had the car all of my windows start falling one by one. I attempt to replace the first one the driver-side passenger window it has been repaired but it was costly. I tried to see if there were any recalls prior to getting it to fix there weren't any at the time. So, within the last year, I have been experiencing my car using oil very frequently. So, now I am having to monitor the usage of oil in my vehicle. This can be very costly since inflation is going up. I stop going to the KIA dealership in Tallahassee because I only had to replace a battery and it cost me $700 after the guy told me he would remove the diagnostic fee. I asked him how much prior to replacing my battery and he told me that it would be around $300.It stressed so bad that I had a heart attack and was placed in the hospital. This was a predatory service fee. I believe Kia can be a better company, by repairing what the consumer is unaware such as faulty window motors and motors with high volume consumption.

Excess Oil Consumption OK with KIA
A red oil can indicator light came on while I was driving, which surprised me since there were 6,119 miles since my last oil change. I went to the dealership where I bought it to have the oil changed and asked that they note how many quarts low it is. My Optima has 55,761 miles and has been serviced regularly by the dealership. The dealership didn't note on my service that it was 3.5 quarts low or that I requested an oil consumption test for excessive oil use. I was told that 1 quart per 1,500 miles is normal use. I said, hmm, really, that would mean that I would use 5 quarts of oil every 7,500 miles. I was also told that an oil consumption test indicates a problem if 1 quart of oil is consumed in 1,000 miles. Currently my Optima is consuming a quart every 1,700 miles, no leaks, at this rate I would have to put in 4.4 quarts of oil between oil changes; they say this is normal.

2016 Kia Optima
Omg, where do I began, I purchased this car for my daughter for school.. Beautiful on the outside, fully loaded but the engine is bad.Oil light, blinks, so we took the car to Fred Anderson Kia in Raleigh NC , they told us we had to do oil consumption test. We have total done 3.. Now they say basically we need new engine, no help from Kia.. I have tried reaching out to so many people, no help. I have read, they have recall on these types of engine but Fred Anderson can’t seems to find.. This car knocks and shakes but they say , it doesn’t fall in the guide lines of the recall. If someone can help me get a new engine, please reach out to me. They have treated me, like the Customer, don’t even matter, move on to the next person. It’s very sad!!!! If I could give less than , one star, I would!!!

This vehicle is falling apary
I bought my 2016 Kia Optima in 2018 with less than 15,000 miles on it, It's been a pretty good car until recently. I get regular maintenance on my car, to my surprise, i recently had to put in 6 quarts of oil in the last 2 weeks. I have no leaks. Started researching the problem and found out this is "normal". I don't think so. My headlights have gone off by themselves while driving in the dark, do you know what that does to a person? Scared the c**p out of me. And lately, my check engine light comes on, i open up the gas cap, put it back on, and poof, it will go off again, only to come back on about 1/2 a tank full. I'm starting to regret buying this car, and they want us to pay for it. What kind of c**p is that. This is the only car I've had in my life where I've had so many problems.

2016 Kia Optima oil consumption problem
I bought the car with 32,000 miles and worked great for about two years then at about 68,000 mile noticed oil consumption use went up. Started to put in oil every couple weeks or about every 1,000 miles. Now its going through oil about 2 quarts every week. Took in to the dealership and had a new knock sensor installed and said car passed inspection. As of today the car is not running because the catalytic converter is clogged and the car won't run. Kia assistance says the can't do anything until engine fails. Crazy how Kia handles engine problems. I'm am single elementary school teacher and it was my first car purchased after college. This really sucks.

2016 Kia Optima Oil Consumption Issue.
Hello, I purchased a NEW Kia Optima in 2016, NOT a Turbo. Car currently has 68000 miles and maintained matictusly with oil changes every 4000 miles and all required maintenance. It is using oil 1 quart ever 800 miles. Went in for oil consumption text after contacting Kia Cooperate. Changed from my original dealer service department to a different dealer service department at the advise of Kia Cooperate. After months of oil consumption testing etc... My new motor is on order. Moral of the story is don't give up! Keep fighting. Keep calling.... I love my Kia, It has been an amazing car, comfortable ride, great reliability and no other issues.

Consumer
Kia Optima 2016 is the worst car ever. My Kia uses 4 qt oil every 1,000 miles and started at 132,000. Have all my records of oil change and Kia will not do anything about it. Pistons have to be bad been thru multi bull on this car and I am resorting to the lemon law at this point .Kia knows they have a problem and will not produce a recall on them . The same engine is in the Huyundi and they settle out of court on the models starting in 2014. The settlement ( life time on engine) only covered the lower part of the engine. So Kia will not do. Anything about excessive oil consumption. We will see about this Kia

The cons of owning a 2016 kia optima.
One thing that I do not like is the seat belt sensor in the passenger seat. It is very sensitive. When I put something in my seat that is very lightweight (something that should not make the seat belt "ding"), sometimes the seat belt sensor will not go off. Another issue that I have had with my kia is, my headlights have gone off while driving at night. My headlights were on in the automatic position. This is an issue that I reported and is something that I feel is very dangerous.

It is maroon, tan interior and it is a 2016 with about 60,000 miles on it.
I have had my car now for 3 years and I am disappointed with how it is held up. Both back windows quit working, the transmission slips all the time to the point where I am scared to even get on the interstate or drive too far, the tire pressure gauge is messed up and always makes me think I have a flat tire when I do not at all. My passenger side door handle broke off, both charger ports do not work, the paint is peeling off the car, and the interior leather is ripping.

2016 Kia optima engine recall.
Found out recently about an engine recall and it has been very difficult to get Kia to fix the issue. I now have to top off my oil every 500-750 miles to prevent further engine damage if not, potentially end up stranded on the side of the road or visit a dealership every 500-750 miles, which is once a week for me due to the distance I drive for work, to do what they call an oil consumption monitor to hopefully receive the approval needed to repair the engine recall.

Kia Optima has several issues
Drives nice but my electronics turn off at random times. My heater also somehow managed to stop working. The car is not reliable, you never know when your car is going to break down or have some kind of issue. Once, my car would not unlock using the key fob so I had to get in using the key. Once I got in, I popped the hood and the car alarm went off. I have no idea why these issues keep happening.

I have lost all interest after discovering all the already known problems.
There are recalls on the cars as far as engine and transmission and they want own there fault. The problems are only verified on TSA bulletins. Will be spending money out pocket to fix problems. Kia selected certain years to honor the defects instead of all call in the year brackets of classifications of reported problems.

Problem with engine and it idles hard after hitting 60,000 miles the car looks good on the outside but may problems long term. We bought the car brand new and the first year it was a great reliable vehicle but then you have to start paying for repairs while still trying to make car payment. Problems with acceleration.

Unreliable car
Poor gas mileage. The passenger door always feel like it's stuck when opening or closing. My car is burning a lot of oil at 45,000 miles. It's going through its 4th oil consumption test. Now the dealership is cleaning the engine. I will never buy another kia again. I have no confidence in this vehicle.

The Kia optima is trash, I hate this car.
It's not that roomy on the inside, it does not pick up speed, the amount of gas that goes into the car is horrible I might as well have a truck, the gas goes out as fast as it's put in, check engine light comes on randomly but nothings wrong. If I can go back in time I wouldn't have bought this car.

2016 Kia review. Had an engine recall.
Poor quality interior. Not enough bells and whistles to a comparable sedan by different manufacturer. No lock on glove compartment. Windows should be auto up and down for both passenger and driver. Get up and go could have a little more power. Merging into highways these days are dangerous.

Engine stalling issue for the Kia optima.
Well my Kia dies when you come to a stop after driving for several hours on a long trip. It is very frustrating. It also shudders when I pull up to a stoplight or stop sign which makes me think that it is about to die. Kia will not recall the cars for the problem either.

Pretty on the outside weak everywhere else
Small things like the door handle and door trims break or just fall off over time. There's not much durability on the body as well. The car typically has issues with the power windows where I swear I hear a whistle sound when I reach a certain rate of speed

This vehicle is recall city.
I appreciate my car but it has a lot of problems that need to be fixed. The car had a recall on the engine which was frightening and also the steering wheel had a recall on that as well. It is not too costly to fix but beware that it does have problems.
